Hamilton Police Service is committed to the responsible, lawful and accountable use of artificial intelligence. AI may help strengthen public safety, improve service delivery and support effective policing, but its use must protect privacy, human rights and public trust.
As new tools are considered and adopted, HPS will assess their risks and apply safeguards appropriate to their purpose and potential impact. AI will be used only for a clearly defined, legitimate purpose, where its use is justified and proportionate to the need, and where legal, privacy, security, human rights and Service requirements have been addressed.
These responsibilities apply throughout an AI system’s lifecycle, from development or acquisition through use, monitoring and retirement. HPS will maintain governance, transparency and human oversight, with attention to reliability, security and the integrity of evidence.
AI will support—not replace—human judgment, professional discretion or legal accountability. Responsibility for decisions and actions remains with the Service and its members.
