Gail Ryan
Hamilton Police continue to seek information about the homicide of 20-year-old Gail Ryan, who moved from New Brunswick to Hamilton to work and build an independent life.
On September 25, 1973, shortly after 10:00 p.m., Gail left a downtown driving lesson and waited at a bus stop on Main Street East. Two men approached her, and the three walked to the nearby Elmar Hotel tavern at Main and Caroline streets.
Later that night, Gail took a taxi home to Jackson Street East with a man who has never been identified. The driver described him as approximately 21 years old, five feet nine inches tall and 165 pounds, with brown hair reaching his shoulders at the back. He wore blue jeans, a dark blue jacket and black boots.
In the early morning hours, neighbours heard voices from Gail’s apartment, followed by a scream and breaking glass. No one called police.
After Gail failed to attend work at Robinson’s department store, her landlord checked on her and discovered her body. She had suffered blunt force injuries and stab wounds. Investigators believe the attack was sexually motivated.
Police interviewed more than 50 witnesses and released composite sketches, but the man who accompanied Gail home remains unidentified. Investigators believe advances in DNA testing could help solve the case.
Gail had been saving to visit her family at Christmas and hoped her younger sister would eventually join her in Hamilton. Her family continues to seek answers.
A $2,000 reward remains available. Anyone with information about the men Gail met that evening or the circumstances of her death is asked to contact Hamilton Police.
A name, a conversation or a memory from that night could still help identify Gail’s killer. Anyone who has held back information is encouraged to share it now.
You do not need to have witnessed the crime or be certain your information is significant. Something you saw, heard or remember could help investigators find answers for a family still waiting.
