Helen Gillings
Hamilton Police continue to seek information about the homicide of 19-year-old Helen Gillings, an Indigenous woman and mother of two young daughters.
On February 17, 1995, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Helen’s body was discovered in an alley behind 483 King Street East, near Emerald Street North in Hamilton. She had been strangled.
Helen was last seen alive in the early morning hours of February 16, 1995, leaving the former Straw Hat Tavern at King and Emerald streets and entering the alley with a man. Investigators have since identified that individual.
Helen was known in the neighbourhood and was engaged in sex work in the area. Born in Kenora and raised in Alberta, she moved to Hamilton in 1994. She is remembered as bright, with a love of animals and drawing.
Investigators believe people have information that could help solve Helen’s murder. A $10,000 reward is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
Anyone with information about Helen’s movements before her death or the circumstances of her murder is asked to contact Hamilton Police and reference case number 95-030477.
With the passage of time, someone who was previously reluctant to speak may now feel ready to come forward. Your information could help bring answers and justice for Helen and her family.
You do not need to have witnessed the crime or be certain your information is significant. Something you saw, heard or remember could help investigators find answers for a family still waiting.
