Maurice Young
Hamilton Police continue to seek information about the homicide of Maurice Young, who died from injuries sustained in a shooting outside his business.
Born in Iraq as Maurice Yacoob, he moved to Canada and changed his surname to Young. He lived in Toronto, where he owned several stores and properties.
On December 14, 1987, Maurice attended one of his businesses on Upper James Street in Hamilton. A man described as being in his 20s confronted him in the parking lot. Following a heated exchange, the man shot Maurice and fled.
Maurice was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He died from his injuries on March 19, 1988.
Before his death, Maurice told investigators he recognized his attacker and believed the shooting was connected to a lawsuit arising from a failed property transaction at 1 Duke Street in Hamilton. A series of strokes affected his memory during his recovery.
A man was arrested during the investigation, but no charges were laid. The homicide remains unsolved.
Anyone with information about the shooting, the attacker’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the property dispute is asked to contact Hamilton Police.
With the passage of time, someone who was previously reluctant to speak may now feel ready to come forward. Even the smallest detail could help investigators solve Maurice’s murder and bring answers to his family.
You do not need to have witnessed the crime or be certain your information is significant. Something you saw, heard or remember could help investigators find answers for a family still waiting.
